  • Jeep pickup truck at Sulphur Creek Ranch in central Idaho. The ranch was cut off from all roads in about 1975 so this vehicle has no way out and must be repaired on-site with parts flown in or brought in on horseback.

  • To reach the Doaksville dig, you have to walk through the Fort Towson cemetary and take a trail out the back to the dig.

  • I had read about Doaksville in history books. It was an important trading point for the Choctaw Indians and people traveling through Indian Territory on their way to Texas.

  • When you travel in the area between Clayton, Honobia, Smithville, Broken Bow, and Antlers, you are in some very remote and rugged terrain. You could easily break down and it could be days - or never - before someone found you. Cell phone service is mostly non-existent unless you get lucky on the top of a mountain. It is very easy to get stuck, break down, or get hurt. I like to carry a satellite beacon plus some tools and a first aid kit. I really want a winch on the Wrangler but that will have to come a bit later. Need to be self-sufficent out here. And ALWAY have plenty of gas, because it can easily be a hundred miles to a gas station.

  • I can't remember what river this was - maybe the Glover? I thought it was a cool picture and shows the area well.

  • Found this cool wooden bridge and of course had to stop and take a photo.

  • After leaving Fort Towson, I headed north again into the timber company land. I had some public fishing ponds marked on my GPS and wanted to find some ponds and do a little fishing.

  • I have never been to the archialogical dig at Doaksville, although I always wanted to visit the site. Unfortunately I didn't plan enough time on this trip.

  • Hugo is the winter home of several circus groups. I don't know where they stay during the winter, but many are buried in the Mount Olivet Cemetary.

  • I grew up riding horses and competing in rodeos, even making it to the Oklahoma High School Finals in about 1977. I clearly remember Freckles Brown, who was retired from bull riding by then. He was quite the hero. I never road bulls and never wanted to, but mad respect to those crazy enough to climb on such a huge, crazy beast. Lane Frost came along a bit after me so I never knew him juch. both he and Freckles Brown, two world champing bull riders, are buried near each other in the Moutn Olivet Cemetary in Hugo.

  • Not sure what they are using this old train depot for in Hugo. Maybe an event center now?

  • I have been to Honobia (pronounced HO-NUBBY by the locals) many times. Not much there but some really cool - and remote. - trails. It is a long way from anywhere.
